Autumn Equinox: A Time to Slow Down, Nourish and Reset

There’s something about the arrival of autumn that invites us to pause.
The mornings become a little cooler, the evenings begin to draw in, the light starts to change and nature slowly begins to let go.
This week marks the Autumn Equinox – a beautiful turning point in the year when day and night are almost equal in length. From here, we gradually move towards shorter days and longer nights, leaving behind the lighter, more outward energy of summer and moving into a quieter, slower season.
And perhaps we can take a little inspiration from nature.
A change of season is also an opportunity for change within us
We often think of September as a time for fresh starts. The summer holidays are coming to an end, routines begin to return and there can be a natural desire to refocus.
But rather than seeing this as another opportunity to overhaul everything, I like to think of the Autumn Equinox as an invitation to pause and check in with yourself.
How are you feeling?
How is your energy?
Are you sleeping well?
Are you nourishing yourself properly?
Are you moving your body in a way that feels good?
And perhaps most importantly…
What does your body need from you now?
Our bodies are constantly responding to our environment, and the changing seasons can naturally influence our appetite, energy, sleep, mood and routines.
As the temperature drops, we may find ourselves naturally moving towards warmer, more nourishing foods – hearty soups, stews, roasted vegetables, warming spices and comforting meals.
And that’s okay.
In fact, it can be a wonderful opportunity to work with your body rather than against it.
The permission to slow down
Summer often has a completely different rhythm.
Longer days, lighter evenings, holidays, social occasions, BBQs, travel and a little more spontaneity.
Then autumn arrives.
The mornings are darker. The evenings become quieter. The weather can be grey and rainy.
And sometimes we resist that change.
We feel that we should still be doing more, achieving more, fitting everything in.
But what if the grey skies and gentle rain are actually giving us permission to soften and slow down?
Nature doesn't try to hold on to summer.
The trees don't resist letting go of their leaves.
The seasons simply change.
Perhaps we can allow ourselves to do the same.
Nourishment for the season ahead
As we move towards the cooler months, nourishing ourselves becomes even more important.
This isn't about dieting or restriction.
It's about giving your body what it needs to feel supported.
Whole, nutrient-dense foods. Plenty of colourful vegetables and fruit. Good sources of protein. Healthy fats. Fibre-rich foods. Plenty of water.
Warm, comforting meals that nourish rather than leave you feeling sluggish.
And perhaps a little more preparation too.
A pot of homemade soup in the fridge.
A nourishing stew in the freezer.
A healthy breakfast ready for busy mornings.
Small things that make looking after yourself easier when life gets busy.
Because healthy living doesn't have to be complicated.
Sometimes it's simply about creating an environment where making nourishing choices feels natural.
A gentle reset
I love the change of seasons as an opportunity for a gentle reset.
Not a dramatic detox.
Not a restrictive diet.
Not another set of rules to follow.
A reset can simply mean coming back to yourself.
Getting back into a regular sleep routine.
Eating nourishing meals at regular times.
Spending more time outdoors.
Moving your body consistently.
Drinking more water.
Reducing the things that leave you feeling depleted.
Making space for rest.
And becoming a little more aware of what your body is telling you.
Sometimes the biggest changes don't come from doing more.
They come from doing less, but doing the things that matter more consistently.
Let nature set the pace
One of the things I love most about working holistically is looking at the bigger picture.
Your nutrition is important, but so is your sleep.
Your movement matters, but so does your mindset.
What you eat matters, but so does how you feel, how you live and how you manage stress.
Health isn't about one perfect meal, one workout or one supplement.
It's about the relationship between all of these things.
And the Autumn Equinox gives us a lovely opportunity to step back and look at that bigger picture.
Perhaps this is your moment to ask yourself:
What would help me feel more nourished?
What would give me more energy?
What could I let go of?
Where could I slow down?
What small change would support me through the season ahead?
You don't need to change everything.
Choose one thing.
Start there.
Embrace the season
So, as we say goodbye to summer, perhaps we don't need to resist the changing season.
We can embrace it.
Pack away the BBQ with gratitude.
Welcome back the slow cooker.
Pull on your favourite cosy jumper.
Go for a walk amongst the changing leaves.
Make a nourishing bowl of soup.
Light a candle.
Get an earlier night.
Spend a little less time scrolling and a little more time being present.
And listen a little more closely to what your body is asking for.
The Autumn Equinox reminds us that change is natural.
That there is a time for growth, a time for abundance and a time for slowing down.
We don't have to force the transition.
We can simply move with the season.
Nourish.
Restore.
Refocus.
And make space for what you need next.
Perhaps autumn is your invitation to come back to yourself.
And sometimes, that is where the most meaningful change begins.
